Why iMessage is conditional
iMessage delivery is available on supported messaging lines and destinations — never universally. Here's exactly what that means and how the platform handles it honestly.
What determines iMessage availability
- Line configuration — iMessage-capable lines are a specific type, confirmed during onboarding
- Destination support — availability varies by country and recipient
- Recipient reality — not every phone number has iMessage, and that changes over time
How routing handles it
Send with channel "auto" and the platform routes per recipient: iMessage where it's available, SMS otherwise (when fallback is configured on the line). Fallback happens for eligible failures before confirmed delivery — never a duplicate send.
The channel actually used is recorded on the message and reported on your webhook, so your data reflects reality rather than intent.
Why we won't promise more
Vendors that promise universal iMessage delivery are describing something that cannot be guaranteed. We'd rather you plan for "iMessage where supported, SMS everywhere" and be occasionally pleasantly surprised than the reverse.
